Text description provided by the architects. The Historical Archive of the Garraf Region is situated on a corner in an industrial area of Vilanova i la Geltrú. It contains only a part of the general archive which is placed inside the Geltrú’s Castle in the old town of Vilanova.
The main purpose of the building is the storage of documents ( 1,200 m2 1,600 m2 total), with a small section of classification and documentation.
Giving an answer to the main use of warehouse in the industrial environment where is located it have been built four opaque, aligned and repeatedly distributed modules, placed on a concrete plinth that facilitates the access to the building and the possible expansion of the basementdeposits .
The dimension of the modules is because of the functional needs and the standards of the documents repositories. The free spaces between them allow the natural light inside, as well as the existence of generous spaces facility.
One of the module is destined to the reception, working spaces and classification of documents. This module is distinguished from others with the big and elevated door to reinforce the main access to the building.
The internal circulation is organized through a corridor that crosses perpendicularly all modules, facilitating the distribution of material, the entry of natural light and creating two different dimensions of repositories required.
The main steel structure frames the exterior facade, finished on wood, a material that will change naturally and creates a soft transition between the industrial zone and the future park near the building.
